Rainbow Trust is a charity that works with terminally ill children. The staff visit children and families in their own home. Nicholas had two workers that visited him, Linda and Marlene. They brought appropriate toys with the aim of providing stimulation for Nicholas. The workers were loving and attentive with him. Sometimes it helps to share feelings, worries and anxieties with someone experienced and knowledgeable, someone who will not be traumatised by what is said, and is able to offer empathy and support. It is good to have someone to talk to who understands. Nicholas could not be left alone with Linda or Marlene, a member of the family always had to be present. This is because Nicholas had medical needs and was at risk from his seizures and vulnerable. The Rainbow Trust team provide support where and when it is needed, and visited Nicholas in hospital. This was welcome for the days could be physically and mentally draining, long and tedious.
Rainbow Trust have a beautiful cottage in Northumberland – Fernstone. Families can stay there and enjoy being looked after for a few days. The staff take over the domestic and caring role, and this gives families a well earned rest. Children must be accompanied by a main carer when going to Fernstone. Families can spend time playing with their children, and doing nice things – a treat for children and their carers.
